1954 BENTLEY
CHASSIS# B77ZX

1951 brought the world a new Bentley. It was attractively styled, some were ornate coach built examples and others resembled a new direction adopting a long sweeping fastback as a long coupe. While styling and mechanical changes were similar to the Rolls-Royce silver Dawn the R-Type offered a longer trunk, lower profile, and was capable of speeds in excess of 100mph in stock un-altered form. Additionally they were understated and compared to the Rolls-Royce and marked one of the early instances where the two companies began to differentiate themselves in the post war period. Approximately 2,320 of these attractive R-types were built throughout their short production run. Specially constructed and built for Bob Gooda by Robert Peel this R-Type Fastback Coupe represents a rare post war example for competitive racing. What perhaps is most interesting is that the R-Type remains today as one of the most luxurious cars of the era and its appearance on a track, at speeds rounding a hairpin curve, is almost unbelievable. However that is exactly what took place behind the wheel of the car offered here. The San Diego Collection is delighted to offer this special and very unique Bentley as it remains as one of the last entries of the established British companys foray into competitive racing. There is truly nothing like it, this particular car offers the new owner a unique inclusion in one of Historic racings most exclusive club as well as the most elegant way to arrive at the track or post event dinner.

This special fastback two-seater coupe was built to the special order of the late Robert (Bob) Gooda, and one time was jointly owned by Racer Brian Dumps. Brian had raced the car at a BDC Silverstone in 1967.

This 1954 Bentley R-Type Coupe Chassis # B77ZX is well known and featured in the Bentley Book Fifty years of the Marque by Johnnie Greene. The car has been fully restored within the last 2 years and just recently completed the Colordao Grand 1000 mile tour. The car runs excellent and needs nothing. The vehicle was shown at this years 2008 Quail Lodge Concours during the Monterey Classic car events on August 15,2008.

This vehicle has been recently tuned and restored. It was finished in British Racing Green and striped to give a bold look when rallying around corners and on the track. A few unique touches have been added including a louvered hood, painted Radiator Shell, Custom Built wheels, and attractive racing vents up front and at the rear. The vehicle runs very strong and holds the road like a sports car. Since the Colorado Grand the car has been used sparingly and only taken on a special runs and events. Most recently just after the Quail Show on the 15th of August we drove the car around Pebble Beach and the Monterey Peninsula. We received more attention in this vehicle then some of our more Prestigious, more expensive cars in the collection. This is a one-off Special order Bentley that can be raced, shown or toured. If you have ever desired to own one of the Unique Special Order Bentleys this is the car to own it is one of the most unique and one of the most highly sought after examples. Now in its restored and event ready condition you are buying a great value with a great history.
